Spruce Up your House by Gardening!

Tue ,10/11/2009
Jake Marsh Said:

It’s a good time to start thinking and planning ahead for your garden. A neat and tidy front yard can enhance a property, but a beautifully planned one can really make an ordinary house look special.

Some accessories that will make your yard look really good can be very inexpensive. Most of us are on a budget, especially these days when we never know how much it will cost to fill up our gas tank. Sometimes at this time of the year, you can find last year’s garden accessories discounted. Benches or garden lights may be listed for sale before the new stock comes in.

There are some basic rules which apply to every garden. Before you start you should try and afford a soil test. This is quite inexpensive and either your local nursery or the Internet will tell you how to go about it. You can also buy do-it-yourself kits. The second thing is to dig compost into your garden, and now (winter) is a good time.

If you are having a soil test carried out, you will know from the results if you should add any other nutrition to your soil. A soil test will mean you will not be buying the ‘wrong’ shrubs, plants etc for your soil type.

There is one last thing that you should monitor: how long and where the sun shines on different parts of your garden. Plants can thrive without direct sunlight, but only if you plant a type that likes the shade. This can still include many bright, colorful plants (i.e. impatiens), so you can still brighten up dull areas.

Once you decide to buy, you do not want to waste your money by having the plants or shrubs die on you. The soil test will curb some of these mistakes. The other thing to do is to look up, on the Internet or from a book, your particular growing zone. If you live in an area where, for instance, you come into the ‘Hardiness Zone’, it will enable you to pick the type of plant that has the best chance of surviving in your type of climate.

Always put short and stocky plants in front of taller ones. Remember to check the expected height to know this information – do not decide by the height at purchase time. Remember that short and stocky plants are generally tougher and more resilient, so choose more of these.

Try to resist buying plants in bloom at the time of purchase. The ones that still have to bloom will probably be stronger for the transplant process. If you have more shady areas than you wish, think about drastically trimming a tree to get more sunlight onto certain patches. Remember that some plants like a lot of water, so group these together to make the watering less laborious for you.

There are many small accessories that will really make your yard stand out. Obviously a strategically placed bench -or chairs and small table- under a tree will look welcoming and relaxing. A small bridge can really enhance a yard, and you can use it as a focal point for a few reeds or grasses to give the impression of water. Or if you feel daring you can try digging your own long shaped pond. Instructions on this are easy to find in books or on the ‘net.

For cheap plants (in fact free ones!) buy a can of ‘rooting powder’ and offer to swap cuttings with your neighbors. It is not recommended to sneak out at midnight with your scissors in hand!!

Great Ideas For A Garden Pergola Design

Fri ,30/10/2009
Ann Marier Said:

Pergolas are open designed gazebos intended for garden areas; the pergola can be a free standing feature like a gazebo or are attached to the home like a deck. The open work ceiling of the area still provides shade while opening up the area to the sky; this can make small spaces seem larger.

Pergola garden designs all begin with the pergola itself. A pergola is a simple structure that only takes boards, a little cement, and wood screws or nails to build. There are several supporting columns which are planted in the ground using cement for stability and an open design ceiling that is either beams or a loose cross hatching design.

Staining is usually the most pressing maintenance required the pergola portion of the pergola garden design. To make a terrific comfortable pergola garden design choosing the plants, the motif, and the accessories will bring the space together.

The Plants

Because the areas are often floored with tiles, concrete, or gravel potted plants are often pergola garden design style of choice. Potted plant gardens are easy to begin and to maintain, as an added bonus they can be easier to control than a traditional garden, plants have a harder time spreading and weeds are easier to catch.

In the pots a combination on climbing plants and small trees will accentuate the height of the pergola garden design. There are several flowering climbing plants such as honeysuckle and morning glory do well and smell very nice. Fruit bearing trees are also a nice choice for a potted pergola garden as dwarf versions of many trees so well in pots and they will actually bear fruit.

Many types of roses will also climb the structure of a pergola, allowing the pergola garden design to be covered in the fragrant beauty of the roses. The inside of the area could continue the theme by having potted rose bushes which have been encouraged to grow in interesting designs like a shrub.

The Accessories

A pergola garden design should include accessories which enhance the enjoyment of the space. Props, water features, night time lighting, and furniture can make a simple garden a place where the entire family or groups of friends will enjoy spending time.

In very hot climates, a pergola garden design could include water misters which would water the plants and provide cooling spray at preset intervals, making the space enjoyable all summer long. Gliding benches and porch swings can also be nice accompaniments on a pergola, provide a comfortable place to sit and think, while relaxing in the tranquil environment of the pergola garden.

Water Gardening Supply Center- 7 Reasons For Joining A Water Gardening Supply Center!

Sun ,18/10/2009
Abhishek Agarwal Said:

Probably you have finished with the outdoors and the indoors, and are now planning to get into water gardening. Well, do you know how to go about it? If no, then search for a local water gardening supply center and go to them for advice.

What are the benefits provided by a water gardening supply center?

(1) Everything required for your water garden is available at this center. They not only provide essential supplies, but have experts on their staff who come forward to resolve any problems that you may encounter as well as answer all your questions.

(2) A major item available at any water gardening supply center is a range of aquatic plants. It is exactly like a supermarket where you have a wide variety to choose from–plants growing in deep water, water lilies, bog garden plants, marginal plants, floating plants and submerged plants. In case the plant that you want is not available at the current time, the dealer is able to suggest a suitable alternative.

In fact, he/she is able to guide you regarding the setting of your garden too, by letting you know which plants complement one another and which are markedly different.

(3) Ask your dealer about pests too. You are advised about bird-attracting plants and insect-attracting plants.

(4) Coming to the actual creation of your water garden, you can get information on preparing a pond, how to ensure that your plants and fish survive harsh weather conditions, what is to be done during different seasons, and so on.

(5) A water gardening supply center offers all kinds of equipment and tools too. There are a variety of kits that allow you to test your garden’s water source and get rid of unwanted substances. Decoration materials like containers of all sorts, bricks, stones, statuary and fountains are also available.

(6) No garden is without its problems. So you need to keep a constant check, and lavish a lot of care on your water garden to enable the plants to thrive.

The best way to offset future problems is to create a balance among all the “inmates” of your garden. There should not be too much of one thing only, be it deep water plants with surfacing foliage, floating plants or submerged plants. The same with aquatic animals–snails, fresh water mussels or fish. But find out if these animals are necessary or not? Do you need to use tablets or sachets as fertilizers, or not? Of course, since they should not be responsible for polluting the water, they are specially prepared.

(7) If during the course of things, you discover that the pond is looking greener in color, there is an unexpected leakage in your liner, or your fish are meeting with sudden deaths–run to the water gardening supply center!

The water gardening supply center will first advise you on how to take care of these irritants. If you still find them too difficult to handle, there is an expert maintenance man on their staff who can deal with such problems quite efficiently. Just in case a professional is unavailable, ask the dealer for a reference to the nearest one.

Gardening Indoors? Find the Right Tools

Sat ,03/10/2009
Christopher Jay Said:

If you’ve just set up an indoor garden, you’re doubtless excited and want to make sure it grows right and produces results. To do so, you will need to make every effort to ensure your plants get what they need to be as healthy as they can be. For this, you need theproper indoor gardening supplies.

Indoor Gardening Supplies You Need

Indoor gardening supplies are not that much different than gardening supplies for outdoor gardens. However, they differ in that they are specifically designed to use in indoor gardens instead of outdoor gardens and are therefore manufactured to scale. They also are manufactured to cater to the specific needs of indoor gardeners.

For example, if your indoor garden will have many small rocks, you’ll want to put gardening tarp at the very bottom underneath the rocks, so that the rocks stay in one place and don’t move. As an alternative, if you want to, you can simply use larger rocks that will frame the garden and therefore avoid using the tarp. Whichever you choose, they should match with the overall look of the garden. Play with this and have fun.

Next, look at the tools you’ll need for your garden. If the plants you have will require frequent trimming, for example, you’ll need gardening shears or another type of trimmer.

Of course, you’ll also need the correct soil. Because regular soil from the outdoors usually is shy of having the proper nutrients in it for many indoor plants, you’ll need to get gardening soil from your gardening supply or department store. Many specialize in particular kinds of plants, for example, so if your indoor garden is made up of a lot of flowers, for example, you’ll want to look for a gardening soil that will support them. Many even have plant food incorporated right into the gardening soil so that you do not need to buy a separate plant food.

Finally, of course, you’ll need to water your indoor garden; how frequently you do this will depend on the type of plants you have and how dry the atmosphere is indoors. Check with the nursery you bought your plants from to see how often they need to be watered, or search the Internet for information on the particular kinds of plants you have.

Of course, it’s likely that you won’t need the same gardening tools for your indoor garden as you would need for your outdoor garden, such as a weed trimmer or gardening claw. However, your nursery will be able to tell you what you will need for tools and will even gladly supply some of them. As always, for anything you can’t find, the Internet is a good resource, both for information and for tools for your indoor gardening supplies.
